It is an interesting conundrum that, unique
amongst musicians, the conductor personally
makes no sound and yet, for better or worse,
cannot avoid having an effect. In my work I
aim first of all to inspire confidence, both in my colleagues and in the
audience, and secondly to provide an artistic vision as a basis for
collaboration. The realisation of this conception through creative
leadership makes possible what should be our ultimate objective - real
communication between the composer and the audience.
As the world becomes increasingly
technologically advanced I believe that the need for the humanising
influence of the Arts should become ever-greater. If our art is to
survive, though - indeed if it is to deserve to
survive - then we must
make every possible effort to ensure that our audiences leave every
performance with the
sensation of having had the good fortune to have been a part of a truly
special experience.
Jonathan Brett
I love
Jonathan's respect for the music he interprets and for the musicians who
play for him. He believes passionately in what he does and is not afraid
to go where others may not dare for the sake of popularity or
convenience. Jonathan takes many risks in his music making and nothing
is ever set in stone for a minute let alone a concert. As Leader of
English Classical Players I find this wonderfully rewarding, stimulating
and exciting.

I have always enjoyed making music
with Jonathan. He is serious in his preparation, a fastidious and
thoughtful musician, and a caring and considerate accompanist in
concertos (none of which attributes can be taken for granted in the case
of more "celebrated" artists). And like a good electrical
conductor, he can create a lot of sparks! Thanks, Jonathan for some
terrific music making.

I had an experience of the rare
professional pleasure, playing with excellent conductor Jonathan Brett
and his brilliant orchestra English Classical Players.
I'm deeply convinced that Mr.
Brett is one of the best conductors of his generation. His artistic
presence is always determined by his exceptional technical
masterliness, strong aesthetic taste, profound and very interesting
reading of the music he performs.

Pianist, composer, professor of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire
Jonathan
is one of the very few conductors who genuinely cares about and has
respect for the players in his orchestra. Not only does he make
sure to engage good players and soloists, but he also goes to a great
deal of trouble preparing and marking the orchestral parts. The
management also looks after the orchestra very well. As a result of all
this the concerts are usually terrific.

Jonathan has been all these years fantastic friend and
experienced and clever colleague, who is always
ready to give advice and share his own experience
with other conductors. He is able to share his own success with
others and also able to joy of things reached by colleagues.

Jonathan is always professional when standing
in front of an orchestra. It
does not seem to matter whether they are the utmost professionals or
youngsters in their first orchestral experience, everyone is treated with
respect. Young and old,
players always seem to “raise their game” when he is conducting, and
strive to perform better for him ...

I
relate well to Jonathan’s appreciation for
art. Everything that Jonathan does, he does it for people who come to
listen to the music and not for commissioners, sponsors or organisers.
